Discovery: The Academic

I was dragging my feet around the Pittsburgh airport on my way back from a weekend at Half Hills Music Festival in Steubenville, OH. My plane had been delayed over an hour, which meant that I’d be missing the last bus home. After arranging a ride back from a buddy of mine, I sat down at an empty terminal and began scrolling through Facebook. A friend had shared this video, with nothing more than the word “wow.”

Discovery: Sleepwalkers

If Ron Burgundy had a time machine he’d leave 2014 with a new favorite band, possibly wondering how they got stuck 40 some-odd years into the future. I’m talking about Sleepwalkers, the perfectly vintage pop suited for apartments smelling of rich mahogany.

Plenty of bands are rocking the vintage well these days. Very few are doing so with as much variety, accuracy, and innovation as Sleepwalkers. 

Discovery: All Dogs

I’m wicked pumped about today’s discovery. I’m a huge Saintseneca fan, so catching wind of a pop/punk side project fueled by the mind of Saintseneca’s Maryn Jones makes this one damn good Wednesday.

Discovery: Ophelia

If you already know about this song, there are pretty much only two explanations: 1) You know Ophelia personally, or 2) you saw this ad:

Discovery: Greg Laswell

I’m pretty sure I discovered this guy from an episode of Criminal Minds or something. Wait, no… no, I discovered this guy while visiting my nursing friend who was watching an episode of what I am now 99.9% sure was actually Grey’s Anatomy.

Discovery: Courtney Barnett

July is five days away. It’s not too late to be discovering summer jams by any stretch of the imagination, but you’re definitely going to want to hit ‘PAUSE’ on the season at least until you’ve hit ‘PLAY’ on that there video.

Discovery: Public

BREAKING NEWS: Fiancée Loves Twenty One Pilots, Looks Up Tour Schedule, Sees Public as Opener, Looks Up Public’s Awesome Music, Tells Me About Them, Becomes Local Hero.

That was going to be the title of this post but the URL would’ve been a complete disaster.

Discovery: Bully

Studio work certainly has its place, but if I’m being 100% honest, I will always choose a live show over a record. Shows are far more telling of who a band really is. In the words of Peter Lee, “a record is just that… a recording of something that actually happened somewhere else that you were not there for”

Discovery: Japandroids

It’s important to have a select few contacts whose musical trust you taste to a fault (resulting in a total destruction of finances should they mention anything musical whatsoever). I just realized I switched ‘trust’ and ‘taste’ in that previous sentence by accident but I’m keeping it and you can’t stop me.

Discovery: Opus Orange

Bandcamp’s site has a Discover section where you can do incredibly self-explanatory and musical things. However, it SHOULD be called “Discover & Maybe Cry,” because that’s pretty much how Opus Orange came into my life.
